Nuance Versus Newspeak: How Language Shapes Our Reality
Shakti Sita is back with an important episode about language. There are many buzz words that have deliberately been used to move the masses during this time, such as: “flatten the curve” “quarantine” “social distancing” “travel ban” “contact tracing” “I can’t breathe” “new normal.”
These are excellent examples of what George Orwell calls Newspeak, in his dystopian novel that eerily resembles 2020, “1984.”
The goal of Newspeak is to eliminate nuance in order to divide people. This is the time to stick together and be conscious of our word choice.
